synchronization between ipad and mac

After initially synchronizing well between my ipad and laptop, my data stopped being updated on my laptop about three months ago. I believe this was initially due to a lack of storage in icloud. I have now rectified this problem and have plenty of available space, but my mac has still not updated with the ipad, despite the "synchronize data across all devices" button being selected on both devices. Any advice on how to rectify this problem?
