To do list

One thing I miss about my paper planner is the ability to create a general "to do" list. Tasks that are not specifically linked to a subject but something that will remind me of jobs to do.

Is there something that I am missing that serves this function. I have read about "reminders" but cannot work out exactly how they work or how to create one.

These are the reminders. You can add/remove/check them and you can also add an alarm to its.
After adding a reminder, tap on it and select the 'Remind me on a day'.

How do I add that reminders tab that you have shown in your picture. It does not appear on my classes page or anywhere else. Is there an option to switch it off somewhere I have inadvertently selected?

Yup, I guess you turned those reminders off.
You will see on the screenshot I sent an alarm clock icon on the top bar. Tap on it and you will have those reminders back.
